The Enrico Caruso Society and Award

In 1988, the Verdi Opera also established the Statue of Enrico Caruso Society, to honor Enrico Caruso, one of the greatest opera singers in the world. As a tribute to this great artist the Society commissioned master sculptor Ferenc Varga to create a life-size statue depicting Caruso as the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto, one of Caruso's most famous roles. The statue, cast in bronze, is now located at the Detroit Opera House. A miniature replica of the Caruso statue is periodically presented by the Society to worthy representatives of the opera world for their outstanding contributions to this art. Recipients of the Caruso statue include tenors Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Carlo Bergonzi, Scott Piper, Michael Amante, and baritone Sherrill Milnes.
